If you think Luxembourg is just a quick stop between bigger European cities… you’re doing it wrong.

This tiny country packs in storybook castles, dramatic cliffside views, and one of Europe’s most scenic capitals - all in just 24 hours.

And yes, it’s perfect for a quick, high-impact trip (aka ideal for those of us living on limited PTO 😅).

Here’s exactly how to spend an unforgettable 24 hours in Luxembourg 👇

🇱🇺 What to Know Before You Go: Luxembourg Basics

🚌 Public Transportation is FREE

Yes, seriously.

All public transportation in Luxembourg is completely free - including:

  • Trains
  • Buses
  • Trams

No tickets. No passes. And no confusion.

👉 Just hop on and go.

It’s the first country in the world to make public transport entirely free, which makes exploring super easy - especially if you don’t want to rent a car.

🌍 Quick Facts About Luxembourg

  • One of the smallest countries in Europe (you can drive across it in ~1 hour)
  • Borders: Belgium, Germany, and France
  • Languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German
  • Known for: castles, dramatic landscapes, and being one of the richest countries in the world

Despite its size, Luxembourg somehow packs in:
👉 Medieval towns
👉 Cliffside cities
👉 Scenic countryside

All within ridiculously short distances.

🚗 Car vs. Public Transport?

For this itinerary, we rented a car for flexibility (especially getting to Vianden).

BUT if you’re staying based in Luxembourg City:
👉 You could absolutely do this using free public transport + a bit of planning.

🏰 Day 1: Fairytale Vibes in Vianden

Stay: Hotel Heintz

We arrived in the tiny medieval town of Vianden around noon - and honestly? This might be one of the most underrated places in Europe.

👉 Cobblestone streets
👉 Colorful houses lining the river
👉 A literal castle towering above you

Hotel Heintz is perfectly located - quiet, charming, and just steps from everything.

🚡 Take the Chairlift (Trust Me on This)

Start your afternoon with the Vianden Chairlift (€6.50 one way, €9.50 round trip)

  • Ride time: ~10 minutes
  • Views: insane panoramic valley + castle views
  • Effort level: zero (we love that for us)
  • Seasonal from the end of March to the middle of October

This is one of those “how is this not viral?” moments.

🍻 Mid-Stop: Drinks with a View at Ourblick Mountain Chalet

After getting off the chairlift, before heading down to the castle, make a stop at Ourblick Mountain Chalet - right near the top of the chairlift.

This might be one of the best views in Luxembourg.

Grab:

  • A local beer or Aperol spritz
  • A light snack (think simple, mountain-style bites)

Then just… sit for a minute and take in your surroundings

This is one of those slow travel moments where you realize:
👉 you’re standing above an entire fairytale town

🌄 Scenic Walk Down to the Castle

After a lovely spritz stop, don’t rush straight to the entrance of the castle. The 15-minute walk down toward the castle is part of the experience. It might be the most underrated part of Vianden.

As you make your way down:

  • The castle slowly reveals itself from above
  • You’ll get multiple vantage points that are perfect for photos
  • The surrounding valley opens up in a way you just don’t see from below

This is where you get those “how is this place real?” views.

💡 Pro tip: Stop a few times on the way down - some of the best castle photos aren’t at the castle… they’re on this walk. And bring a tripod to get those insta-worthy photos along the way!

🏰 Exploring Vianden Castle

Once you reach the entrance, it’s time to actually step inside one of the most impressive castles in Europe.

Entry: €13

Dating back to between the 11th and 14th centuries, Vianden Castle was once home to powerful counts and later fell into ruin before being carefully restored to what you see today.

Inside, you can explore:

  • Grand halls and medieval rooms
  • A chapel and historic living quarters
  • Elevated terraces with sweeping views over Vianden

It’s the kind of place where you can take your time wandering - and actually imagine what life here once looked like.

💡 Note:  Be mindful of the last entry time if you are visiting later in the afternoon, like we did. We spent a little too much time enjoying our spritz's and taking photos on the beautiful walk down that we almost missed the last entry time which was at 5:30 PM the day we went (closing times vary throughout the year so make sure to check the website for details). Luckily, we made it there just in time - 5:30 PM on the dot!

🌉 Stroll Through Vianden & Along the River

Before or after your castle adventure, carve out time to just…wander (literally one of our favorite things to do).

Vianden is tiny - but that’s what makes it so good.

Walk along the river, cross the little bridges, and let yourself get slightly lost in the cobblestone streets. Every corner feels like it belongs in a postcard.

You’ll find:

  • Pastel houses reflecting in the water
  • Quiet alleyways with barely any crowds
  • Perfect little photo spots literally everywhere

In the evening, the castle lights up, the town glows, and the reflections in the water make it feel like you stepped into a painting.

This isn’t a “checklist” stop.

It’s a slow down and soak it in kind of place - and honestly, that might be the best part of Vianden.

🍲 Dinner at Cafe du Pont

End your day at this cozy riverside spot.

Order this (non-negotiable):
👉 French onion soup

It’s rich, cheesy, and exactly what you want on a chilly spring evening. This was truly one of the best onion soups we've ever had (and we've had A LOT!)

Pair it with a drink, sit by the water, and soak in the “how is this real life” vibes.

🌆 Day 2: Luxembourg City in the Morning

🚗 Drive to Luxembourg City (1 hour)

The next morning, head to the capital - and don’t let the size fool you.

This city is built on cliffs, layered with history, and honestly feels like a mini Switzerland meets fairytale Europe.

🏰 Explore the Bock Casemates

Our first stop of the day was the Bock Casemates. These underground tunnels date back to the 1600s and once made Luxembourg one of the most fortified cities in Europe.

Originally built as a defensive stronghold, the casemates expanded over time into a massive underground network stretching for miles. At first glance, the Bock Casemates might just look like another historic site - but once you step inside, it’s a whole different and immmersive experience.

Entry: €11

🕳 What It’s Actually Like Inside

This isn’t your typical museum.

You’re walking through:

  • Narrow stone tunnels carved into the cliffs
  • Spiral staircases and hidden passageways
  • Openings that suddenly reveal insane views over the valley

It’s part history, part adventure.

At times it feels like you’re exploring a cave… and then you turn a corner and you’re staring out over the Grund from inside the rock walls.

📸 The Best Part? The Views

The real highlight isn’t just the tunnels - it’s what’s outside them.

Throughout the casemates, you’ll find:

  • Window openings carved into the cliffs
  • Overlooks of the Alzette River and Grund below
  • Some of the most unique photo angles in Luxembourg

👉 Think: castle views, cliffs, and cityscapes - all framed through stone archways.

💡 Tips for Visiting

  • 🕐 Plan for about 45–60 minutes to explore
  • 👟 Wear good shoes - there are uneven floors and stairs
  • 📷 Bring a camera - lighting + views = incredible photo ops
  • 🚫 Not ideal if you’re claustrophobic (some tunnels are tight)

🤯 Why It’s Worth It

Luxembourg has a lot of beautiful viewpoints - but this is the only place where you get to experience the city from inside its defenses.

📸 Walk to Chemin de la Corniche

Just a 5-minute walk from the casemates, Chemin de la Corniche where Luxembourg really shows off.

Nicknamed:
👉 “Europe’s most beautiful balcony”

And yeah… it lives up to it.

You’ll get:

  • Sweeping views over the Grund district
  • Bridges crossing dramatic cliffs
  • That classic “why isn’t this place more popular?” feeling

🌉 Wander Luxembourg City & the Grund

After hitting the main viewpoints, don’t just move on - this is where Luxembourg really shines.

Take your time wandering through the old town streets, then make your way down into the Grund, the lower part of the city tucked into the valley.

And this is where things get really good.

You’ll find:

  • Colorful houses lining the river
  • Stone bridges connecting dramatic cliffs
  • Quiet streets that feel completely removed from the city above

It almost feels like two different cities stacked on top of each other.

👉 Old Town = viewpoints + history
👉 Grund = peaceful, fairytale vibes

📍 How to Get Down to the Grund

Getting down there is part of the fun.

You can:

  • Walk down the scenic paths and staircases
  • Or take an elevator

Either way, you’ll end up right along the river - aka one of the most photogenic spots in the country.

🚡 The Scenic Elevator (We Missed This One)

One thing we wish we had time for?

The panoramic glass elevator that takes you down into the Grund.

Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator is a free scenic lift which drops you from the upper city down into the valley - with views the entire way.

Unfortunately, it was a bit out of the way from where we were exploring, so we didn’t make it over there - but if you’re mapping out your day in advance, it’s definitely worth considering.

⏳ Is 24 Hours in Luxembourg Enough?

Honestly? Yes - and no.

You can absolutely hit the highlights in a day:

  • ✔️ Vianden Castle
  • ✔️ Chairlift views
  • ✔️ Luxembourg City viewpoints

But you’ll probably leave thinking:
👉 “Wait… why is no one talking about this place?”

✈️ Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a trip through Belgium, Germany, France, or the Netherlands…

👉 Don’t skip Luxembourg.

It’s one of those rare places that still feels undiscovered, even in Europe.

And for a 24-hour trip?

You get castles, views, and a capital city that somehow still flies under the radar.

Luxembourg was just one stop on our 2-week European adventure. To see where the trip began, check out our Netherlands blog posts to follow the journey from the very beginning.
