After spending time exploring the Rhine Valley, wandering medieval streets in Bacharach, riding cable cars above endless vineyards in Rüdesheim, discovering ancient Roman history in Trier, and stepping into real-life fairytales like Cochem and Eltz Castle… we quickly realized Germany might be one of Europe’s most underrated road trip destinations.

📍Stop 1: Trier - Germany’s Oldest City

Trier completely surprised us.

If you're coming from Luxembourg, like us, Trier is a no brainer stop. This historic city feels very different from the fairytale Rhine towns later in the trip. Instead, Trier blends Roman ruins, colorful architecture, stunning churches, and lively plazas. Trier’s historic center is super walkable, with all the main sights just a few minutes apart - making it an easy, stress-free stop.

It’s the perfect first stop because it eases you into Germany while still feeling incredibly unique.

Is It Worth It?

As a Day Trip:

✅ Yes - Trier is absolutely worth visiting for a day, especially if you enjoy Roman history, architecture, and walkable European cities.

As an Overnight Stay:

❌ Probably not necessary unless you’re moving at a slow pace through the region. We personally felt one half day gave us enough time to experience the highlights.

📍Stop 2: Bacharach - The Fairytale Rhine Valley Town

If someone asked us to picture a “storybook Germany” town… it would probably look exactly like Bacharach.

Half-timbered houses, cobblestone alleys, vineyard-covered hills, castle views, and medieval charm around every corner.

This tiny Rhine Valley town feels frozen in time in the best possible way.

Things we loved:

Wandering the quiet streets
Wine tasting beneath the Wernerkapelle ruins
Castle views overlooking town
The dreamy riverside atmosphere
Staying in a real castle nearby

Bacharach is smaller and quieter than places like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which honestly made it feel even more magical.

Is It Worth It?

As a Day Trip:

✅ 1000% yes. Bacharach is one of the most charming and fairytale-like towns we visited in Germany.

As an Overnight Stay:

❌ We’d actually recommend staying in a nearby castle hotel instead for a more memorable Rhine Valley experience.

📍Stop 3: Rüdesheim & The Rhine Valley Ring Tour

Rüdesheim ended up being one of the most scenic and memorable days of the entire Germany trip.

The famous Rüdesheim Ring Tour combines:

Trains
Chairlifts
Cable cars
Vineyard viewpoints
Rhine River panoramas

…and somehow all of it feels incredibly relaxing instead of rushed.

The vineyard views here honestly looked unreal.

As a Day Trip:

✅ Absolutely. The Rüdesheim Ring Tour ended up being one of our favorite experiences in Germany.

As an Overnight Stay:

✅ Yes. Spending 1–2 nights in the Rhine Valley gives you time to slow down, enjoy the wine towns, and experience the region without rushing.

📍Stop 4: Cochem - Castles & Moselle River Views

Cochem might genuinely be one of the prettiest towns we’ve ever visited.

Colorful buildings line the Moselle River while Reichsburg Castle towers dramatically above town.

It somehow feels:

Romantic
Cozy
Historic
Lively
Fairytale-like all at once

Things we loved:

Exploring the market square
Walking the riverfront
Taking the Mosel Wine Express
Castle viewpoints

Taking the chairlift up the hill for panoramic views

We spent the day just soaking it all in - and this is a place where you don’t need a packed itinerary. This is the kind of place where just walking around is the activity.

📍Stop 5: Eltz Castle - Germany’s Real-Life Fairytale Castle

If you only visit ONE castle in Germany… make it Eltz Castle.

Unlike many castles that sit directly beside towns or roads, Burg Eltz is hidden deep within the forest and feels incredibly cinematic when it finally appears through the trees.

And yes - it really looks like that in person.

The walk to the castle alone feels magical.

Why it’s worth visiting:

Easy day trip from Cochem
Feels straight out of a fantasy movie

⏳ Time Needed

If Visiting as a Day Trip: 2–4 hours (we spent 2 hours but didn't take any of the scenic walks due to rain; however, on a nice day, you could spend much longer enjoying the views).

Is It Worth It?

As a Day Trip:

✅ Completely. Eltz Castle absolutely lives up to the hype and is one of the most impressive castles we’ve visited in Europe.

As an Overnight Stay:

❌ It's not possible to stay overnight but we’d recommend spending a night in nearby Cochem rather than near the castle itself. It makes the perfect base for exploring the Moselle region.

❤️ Why We Loved This Germany Road Trip

What made this trip special wasn’t just the castles or views.

It was how varied everything felt despite the relatively short driving distances.

One day you’re exploring ancient Roman ruins.
The next you’re sipping wine beneath gothic ruins.
Then suddenly you’re floating above vineyards in a cable car overlooking the Rhine River.

Germany surprised us in the best way possible.

And somehow, compared to other European destinations, many of these places still feel underrated.

💡 Tips for Planning Your Germany Road Trip

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall is ideal:

Spring gives you lush vineyards and flowers, while fall brings incredible wine harvest scenery.

Rent a Car

A car gives you maximum flexibility for:

Scenic detours

But many Rhine Valley towns are also connected by train and ferry.

Stay Longer Than You Think

One of our biggest mistakes was underestimating how relaxing and beautiful this region would be.

Places like Rüdesheim and Cochem deserve slow mornings and unplanned wandering.

Don’t overpack your days

The magic is in slowing down.

Germany completely exceeded our expectations.

Between the Rhine Valley, medieval towns, vineyard landscapes, castle hotels, and hidden gems, this ended up becoming one of our favorite European road trips we’ve ever done.
