If Colmar feels like stepping into a storybook at Christmas, then Strasbourg is the grand finale that brings the fairytale to life. Just a quick train ride or drive from Colmar, Strasbourg transforms into the Capital of Christmas each December, with twinkling lights draped across half-timbered houses and over a dozen themed markets scattered through the old town. Whether you’re wandering beneath the towering tree at Place Kléber, sipping mulled wine by the cathedral, or browsing handcrafted ornaments along cobblestone streets, Strasbourg’s markets offer the perfect day trip to complement your stay in Colmar.

STRASBOURG

Known as the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg lives up to the name. We took the 30 minute train from Colmar to Strasbourg for a day trip. From the train station, the main old town area is about a 15 minute walk. Strasbourg has multiple markets located all across the old town but my personal favorites were the markets at Place Kléber (where you'll find the dazzling Strasbourg Christmas tree) and at the Cathédrale. Strasbourg's cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The cathedral itself makes a visit to Strasbourg worth it.

Unfortunately, it started pouring about an hour after we arrived which really damped the vibe so we didn't have a chance to fully enjoy the markets the way we would have liked. But we still had time for some vin chaud in adorable mugs and kept popping under cute stalls to avoid the rain.

STRASBOURG’S CHRISTMAS MARKET DATES

Strasbourg truly earns its title as the Capital of Christmas with its dazzling collection of festive markets scattered throughout the historic city center. In fact, there are more than 10 individual Christmas markets to explore, each with its own charm and specialties. This year the Strasbourg markets start on November 26 and go through December 24, 2025. More information can be found on the Alsace Christmas Market website here.

STRASBOURG OR COLMAR?

If you are wondering which market to choose, we say BOTH! Definitely try to hit up both the Colmar and Strasbourg markets. Both deliver unique charm in their own ways. However, Strasbourg is a larger city and is easier to reach from Paris. You can take a train from Paris and be in Strasbourg 2 hours later. Colmar requires a connection but is still only an extra 30 minute train ride from Strasbourg. If you have a car and plan to drive around to the smaller Alsace villages (like we did), then we'd recommend Colmar as a base. Just know that both places get extremely busy so if you are able, we'd suggest trying to get tot he markets on weekdays rather than weekends.
