✨ Staying in a Castle in Germany Was WAY More Affordable Than We Expected

When most people hear “castle hotel in Europe,” they probably picture:

  • luxury honeymoon pricing
  • thousand-dollar suites
  • something wildly out of budget for normal humans

Honestly? So did we.

But while planning our Germany road trip through the Rhine Valley, we stumbled across Burghotel Auf Schönburg

…and immediately became obsessed.

Because somehow:

  • it was a REAL castle
  • sitting above the Rhine River
  • with fairytale views
  • and surprisingly…not outrageously expensive

So naturally, we booked it.

And it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire Europe trip.

📍 Where Is Burghotel Auf Schönburg?

The hotel sits above the small Rhine Valley town of Oberwesel, Germany overlooking the Rhine River and surrounding vineyards.

While we didn’t actually spend time exploring Oberwesel itself, we did visit Bacharach - specifically the Historische Altstadt area - which was only about a 10-minute drive from the castle.

And THIS is the quintessential German town you picture when you think about Germany.

We’re talking:

  • half-timbered houses
  • cobblestone streets
  • flower-covered buildings
  • medieval towers
  • tiny alleyways that look straight out of a storybook

It genuinely felt like walking through a movie set.

If you’re staying at Burghotel Auf Schönburg, we’d absolutely recommend setting aside at least a little time to wander Bacharach because it ended up being one of the prettiest towns we saw along the Rhine Valley.

💸 How Much Did It Cost?

This was the part that shocked us most.

We paid around €300 per night for our stay.

And before anyone says:
“Okay but that’s still expensive…”

Keep in mind this included:

  • breakfast
  • on-site parking
  • a welcome drink
  • access to the castle museum

AND ours wasn’t even the cheapest room category.

At the time we booked, there were rooms starting around €240 per night, while some of the more premium rooms included extras like in-room saunas.

Considering what basic hotels can cost in some European and American cities these days… this honestly felt like a surprisingly good value for such a unique experience.

🛏️ The Room We Booked (Room #21)

We booked Room #21 and...let's just say…if you can snag this room, DO IT.

The balcony alone was worth it.

And not just a tiny little standing balcony either.

This thing was HUGE.

Like: sit outside with wine for hours while pretending you’re royalty huge.

The views overlooking the Rhine River and vineyards below were absolutely incredible and ended up being one of our favorite parts of the entire stay.

Truly the kind of balcony dreams are made of.

🏰 Exploring the Castle Grounds

One thing that makes this stay feel extra special is that the castle itself is part of the experience.

The property has:

  • courtyards
  • towers
  • gardens
  • terraces
  • panoramic viewpoints

…and there’s even a small museum included with your stay.

Just wandering around the grounds felt magical. Especially in the evening once things quiet down.

🍴 Dinner and Breakfast at the Castle

Breakfast was included with the stay but dinner was not. We decided to share a bottle of wine and the tasting menu for dinner. Everything was incredible and the service was phenomenal.

The following morning we had the complimentary breakfast which was a buffet style...but not just your average buffet. This buffet included caviar. Can you say fancy schmancy?!

The views from the breakfast area overlooking the Rhine Valley were absolutely stunning and honestly felt straight out of a movie.

This ended up being one of those rare hotels where you actually WANT to slow down and spend time enjoying the property instead of immediately rushing out to sightsee.

🚗 Parking + Practical Tips

✔ On-site parking included: Huge bonus for anyone road-tripping through Germany.

✔ Best done by car: The Rhine Valley is MUCH easier to explore with your own vehicle.

✔ Stay at least one night: Even if it’s a splurge, this felt 100% worth it for the experience.

✔ Request a balcony room if possible: Especially if Room #21 is available 👀

✨ Is Staying in a Castle in Germany Worth It?

For us? Absolutely.

This ended up being one of those travel experiences that felt:

  • unique
  • memorable
  • romantic
  • and surprisingly attainable

And honestly, compared to luxury hotels in a lot of major European cities, this didn’t feel nearly as overpriced as we expected.

If you’re planning a Germany road trip through the Rhine Valley and want one unforgettable stay…this is it.

🏰 Other Castle Hotels in the Rhine Valley

One thing we quickly realized while planning this trip is that staying in a castle in Germany is actually WAY more attainable than we expected.

The Rhine Valley is full of castle hotels ranging from surprisingly affordable stays to full luxury fairytale experiences.

So if Burghotel Auf Schönburg is booked up - or just outside your budget - here are a few other castle hotels worth looking into:

📍 Hotel Burg Reichenstein

This was another castle hotel we heavily considered while planning our trip.

Perched above the Rhine River, Burg Reichenstein has a very romantic, medieval feel with incredible river views and castle-style rooms.

It also tends to come in a bit cheaper than some of the more luxury castle stays in the area, making it a great middle-ground option.

📍 Burghotel auf der Ehrenburg

If you’re looking for a more affordable castle stay, Ehrenburg really caught our attention. In fact, we almost booked this one but they had no availability for the dates we were looking at.

It leans more rustic and historic rather than luxury, but that’s part of the charm.

Compared to many castle hotels in Europe, prices here can be surprisingly reasonable while still giving you the full “sleeping in a medieval castle” experience.

📍 Burg Rheinstein

Burg Rheinstein is one of the most visually stunning castles along the Rhine River.

While it’s more famous as a castle attraction and event venue, they also offer limited overnight stays that look absolutely incredible.

If your goal is pure fairytale vibes, this one is hard to beat.

💡 Our Recommendation

If this is your first time visiting the Rhine Valley, we’d recommend splurging at least once on a castle stay.

Even just one night completely changes the experience and makes this stretch of Germany feel extra magical.

If you got this far, thanks for reading and remember to STAY CLASSLESS 😉
