Most people think Niagara Falls is just a quick stop to snap a photo of the waterfalls - but we can confidently say there's so much more to experience.

From sailing into the mist aboard the Hornblower to soaring over the falls on Niagara Takes Flight, exploring the tunnels behind the cascading water, and wandering the lights of Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls surprised us in the best way possible.

Even though this wasn't our first visit, we still discovered new experiences that made us appreciate the city even more.

Whether you're visiting for one day or planning a longer stay like we did, this guide includes everything we think is worth your time, plus a few attractions we'd prioritize if we were doing it all over again.

Best Things to Do in Niagara Falls

After multiple visits to Niagara Falls, we've experienced many of the area's most popular attractions - and a few hidden gems along the way. If you're wondering which experiences are actually worth your time and money, these are the ones we'd happily recommend again.

If it's your first visit to Niagara Falls, we highly recommend looking into the Niagara Parks Pass before purchasing individual attraction tickets. Depending on how many experiences you plan to do, the pass can save you money while giving you access to many of the area's most popular attractions.

During our visit, we used the Premium Pass to experience several Niagara Parks attractions, including Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Takes Flight, the Whirlpool Aero Car, White Water Walk, the Niagara Parks Power Station, the Floral Showhouse, the Butterfly Conservatory, and unlimited rides on the WEGO bus system. It made getting around the city simple and allowed us to pack a lot into just a few days.

✈️ Niagara Takes Flight

One of the biggest surprises of our trip was Niagara Takes Flight - and it quickly became one of our favorite attractions in Niagara Falls.

As one of the newest experiences in the Niagara Parks collection, this state-of-the-art flying theatre takes you on an immersive journey over the Niagara region. You'll be lifted into the air in front of a massive curved screen while your feet dangle freely, creating the sensation of soaring above waterfalls, vineyards, parks, and some of the area's most iconic landmarks.

Wind, mist, scents, and other special effects make the experience feel incredibly realistic.

If you're debating whether this attraction is worth adding to your itinerary, our answer is an easy yes. In fact, we'd recommend experiencing Niagara Takes Flight before visiting many of the other attractions. It not only builds excitement for the rest of your trip but also gives you a unique perspective of the landscapes, landmarks, and natural beauty that make Niagara Falls such an unforgettable destination.

Classless Wanderers Tip: If possible, ask for a seat on one of the ends of the row. Before the show begins, the seating platform rotates 180 degrees, so those end seats end up closer to the center of the screen during the flight experience, giving you a more immersive view.

🌊 Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls is one of Niagara Falls' most iconic attractions, allowing visitors to descend through tunnels carved into the bedrock before emerging onto observation platforms beside the thundering Horseshoe Falls. Along the way, you'll also find two viewing portals cut directly into the rock, where you can watch the water rushing past from behind the falls.

To be completely honest, this was one of the few attractions that didn't quite live up to our expectations.

While it was certainly interesting to stand so close to the falls and appreciate their immense power, we found the experience itself to be fairly short and less immersive than we had anticipated. The viewing portals mostly offer a view of rushing water, and although the outdoor platforms provide a fantastic perspective of the Horseshoe Falls, we felt other attractions delivered a more memorable overall experience.

That said, we do have one recommendation: if you're planning to visit Journey Behind the Falls, make it one of your first attractions. We experienced it after the Hornblower Cruise, Niagara Takes Flight, and several other major attractions, and we think that made it feel less impressive by comparison. Starting your visit here lets you experience one of Niagara Falls' signature attractions before raising the bar with some of the more immersive experiences later in your trip.

Even though it wasn't one of our personal favorites, we still think it's worth considering - especially if you have the Niagara Parks Pass or it's your first time visiting Niagara Falls. Just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely enjoy it more than we did.

Classless Wanderers Tip: If you're short on time and have to choose between attractions, we'd prioritize the Hornblower Cruise and Niagara Takes Flight before Journey Behind the Falls. But if you have the Niagara Parks Pass, it's an easy addition to your itinerary - just try to do it early in the day or early in your trip.

🚠 Whirlpool Aero Car

The Whirlpool Aero Car is one of Niagara Falls' most unique attractions - and one we definitely think is worth adding to your itinerary.

Originally opened in 1916, this historic cable car carries passengers high above the Niagara Gorge, offering spectacular views of the swirling Niagara Whirlpool and the powerful Class 6 rapids below.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Whirlpool Aero Car is located several miles north of the main Niagara Falls tourist district. Unlike attractions around Clifton Hill and Table Rock, you can't easily walk here. You'll either need to drive, take the WEGO bus, or use another form of transportation to reach it. Thankfully, the Premium Niagara Parks Pass includes unlimited WEGO transportation, making it an easy stop if you're already using the pass.

The ride itself is smooth, relaxing, and offers a completely different perspective of the Niagara River than you'll find anywhere else. Looking down at the turquoise water twisting through the gorge is breathtaking, and it's hard to believe the sheer force of the rapids below.

For us, this was one of the biggest highlights of our visit. It may require a little extra planning to get there, but the scenery alone makes it well worth the trip.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Pair the Whirlpool Aero Car with the nearby White Water Walk since they're only a few minutes apart. Visiting both attractions back-to-back is the most efficient way to explore the northern section of the Niagara Parkway and saves you from making the trip twice.

🛤️ White Water Walk

The White Water Walk is one of my personal favorite attractions in Niagara Falls - and one that's often overlooked by first-time visitors.

After taking an elevator nearly 70 meters (230 feet) down into the Niagara Gorge, you'll step onto a quarter-mile wooden boardwalk that follows the edge of the Niagara River. From here, you're just feet away from the powerful Class 6 rapids, where more than 700,000 gallons of water rush past every second. Seeing the sheer force of the river this close is both humbling and mesmerizing.

Unlike some of the more fast-paced attractions in Niagara Falls, the White Water Walk lets you slow down and simply take in the incredible scenery. There are several viewing platforms along the boardwalk, giving you plenty of opportunities to stop, admire the rapids, and capture some amazing photos.

Our only criticism is the admission price. While we absolutely loved the experience, it is fairly short, and we think the standalone ticket price is a little steep for what you get. In our opinion, it would make perfect sense if Niagara Parks bundled the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car into one ticket, especially since they're located just a few minutes apart and are often visited together.

That said, if you're using the Premium Niagara Parks Pass, this attraction is an easy recommendation. Since it's already included, it's a fantastic stop and one we wouldn't skip.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Visit the White Water Walk immediately before or after the Whirlpool Aero Car. The two attractions are located just a few minutes apart along the Niagara Parkway, making them the perfect pair for a half-day adventure away from the crowds around the falls.

💡 Niagara Parks Power Station at Night

Having visited the Niagara Parks Power Station during the day on a previous trip, we decided to experience the nighttime version this time around - and we're so glad we did. While we enjoyed the daytime tour, the evening experience felt like an entirely different attraction.

The historic power station is beautifully illuminated after dark, creating a completely different atmosphere as you explore the massive turbine hall and interactive exhibits. But the highlight comes at the end of the experience when you descend through the underground tunnel to the observation platform overlooking Horseshoe Falls.

We timed our visit to coincide with the nightly fireworks, and it ended up being one of the most memorable moments of our entire trip. Watching the falls illuminated in vibrant colors while fireworks exploded overhead was absolutely breathtaking. Combined with the immersive light and sound show inside the power station, the entire evening felt incredibly well done.

If you've never visited the Niagara Parks Power Station before, we'd strongly recommend choosing the nighttime experience over the daytime tour if your schedule allows. And if you're fortunate enough to visit during fireworks season, try to time your entry so you're on the viewing platform when the show begins. It takes an already incredible attraction to another level.

For us, this was easily one of the standout experiences in Niagara Falls and one we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone planning a visit.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Check the nightly fireworks schedule before your visit and plan your entry accordingly. Allow yourself enough time to explore the power station and walk through the underground tunnel - a 2,200-foot (670-meter) underground tunnel that once carried water from the generating station back to the Niagara River - so you can reach the observation platform just before the fireworks begin.

🦋 Butterfly Conservatory

Home to more than 2,000 free-flying butterflies from around the world, the Butterfly Conservatory offers a peaceful escape from the crowds and excitement of Niagara Falls. As you stroll through the lush tropical greenhouse, butterflies flutter all around you, often landing on flowers - and if you're lucky, even on you.

The conservatory itself is beautifully maintained, with winding pathways, waterfalls, and vibrant tropical plants creating a relaxing atmosphere that's completely different from the bustling attractions near the falls.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Butterfly Conservatory is located several miles north of the main tourist district. Like the Whirlpool Aero Car and White Water Walk, you'll need to drive or take the WEGO bus to get here, so it's best to combine it with other attractions in the area rather than making a special trip just for this stop.

We enjoyed our visit, but it's one of those attractions that really depends on your interests. If you're fascinated by butterflies, nature, or photography, you'll likely love it and could easily spend an hour wandering the conservatory. If that's not really your thing, you may find it less memorable than some of Niagara Falls' other major attractions.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Visit earlier in the day when the conservatory is typically quieter, and wear bright colors if you're hoping a butterfly might land on you. This also makes for a great rainy day activity.

🌺 Floral Showhouse

Located just a short walk from Table Rock, the Floral Showhouse is a small greenhouse filled with seasonal floral displays, tropical plants, and unique plant species from around the world. The beautifully maintained gardens and colorful blooms make it a peaceful stop. Especially if you're looking for a break from the busier attractions nearby.

While we enjoyed seeing the variety of flowers and exotic plants, we found the experience to be fairly short. We spent about 20–30 minutes exploring the different rooms, and although everything was beautifully presented, it wasn't an attraction we'd personally go out of our way to visit again.

That said, if you enjoy gardening, flowers, or photography, you'll likely appreciate the opportunity to see so many beautiful plants and floral displays. Since it's located right next to several of Niagara Falls' biggest attractions, it's also an easy stop to add to your itinerary if you have the Premium Niagara Parks Pass.

For us, the Floral Showhouse was a pleasant visit rather than a must-see attraction. We wouldn't recommend purchasing a standalone ticket unless you're especially interested in botanical gardens, but it's a worthwhile addition if it's already included with your pass.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Visit while you're already exploring the Table Rock area, either before or after Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Takes Flight, or the Niagara Parks Power Station. Its convenient location makes it easy to fit into your day without requiring any extra travel.

🏛️ Four Heritage Sites

If you're interested in Canadian history, the Niagara Parks heritage sites are a nice addition to your itinerary. Spread throughout the Niagara region, these four attractions offer a glimpse into the area's military history, early settlers, and printing heritage.

📍Laura Secord Homestead

Best known as the home of Canadian heroine Laura Secord, this restored house tells the story of her famous 20-mile journey during the War of 1812 to warn British forces of an impending American attack. Knowledgeable guides help bring the history to life, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in Canada's past.

📍Mackenzie Printery

The Mackenzie Printery is one of the more unique heritage sites, showcasing one of Canada's oldest operating printing presses. You can see historic presses in action, learn about the evolution of printing, and even watch demonstrations throughout your visit.

📍McFarland House

Built in the early 1800s, McFarland House is one of the oldest surviving homes in the Niagara region. The restored property offers a look at early Upper Canadian life and features beautiful gardens overlooking the Niagara River. It's a peaceful stop, though there's less to see here compared to some of the other heritage sites.

📍Old Fort Erie

Old Fort Erie is considered one of the region's most significant historic sites. The fort played an important role during the War of 1812 and features restored buildings, exhibits, and seasonal demonstrations.

Overall, we enjoyed learning more about Niagara's history, but these attractions won't appeal to everyone. If history museums and historic homes are something you already enjoy, they're absolutely worth visiting - especially since they're included with the Premium Niagara Parks Pass. If your primary goal is seeing the waterfalls and major attractions, we'd prioritize those first and visit the heritage sites only if you have extra time.

Classless Wanderers Tip: We recommend combining Laura Secord Homestead, Mackenzie Printery, and the nearby Floral Clock into the same morning or afternoon since they're all located along the scenic Niagara Parkway. They're also just a short drive from several wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, making them easy to add to a wine-tasting day.

🗼 Skylon Tower

Towering 775 feet above the Niagara Gorge, the Skylon Tower offers some of the best panoramic views of both the Canadian and American sides of Niagara Falls. After a quick ride up in the famous exterior glass elevators, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the surrounding Niagara region.

We planned our visit to coincide with the nightly fireworks, and while the views were spectacular, it was also one of the busiest times to visit. The observation deck became quite crowded as everyone gathered for the show, making it a little harder to find the perfect viewing spot.

If we were planning our visit again, we'd probably skip the observation-only ticket and instead make a reservation at the revolving dining room. You'd still get incredible views while enjoying a meal, and it seems like a much more relaxed way to experience the tower - especially during the evening when the falls are illuminated and the fireworks begin.

Even if you don't dine at the restaurant, we still think the Skylon Tower is worth visiting for the incredible 360-degree views. Seeing Niagara Falls from above gives you a completely different perspective and helps you appreciate just how massive the waterfalls and surrounding landscape really are.

Classless Wanderers Tip: If you're hoping to watch the nightly fireworks from the tower, arrive early and expect larger crowds. For a more leisurely experience, consider booking dinner in the revolving restaurant around sunset so you can enjoy daylight views, the illuminated falls, and the fireworks all in one visit.

🚢 Hornblower Niagara Cruises

If there's one attraction we think every first-time visitor should experience, it's the Hornblower Niagara Cruise.

Nothing compares to sailing right up to the base of the Horseshoe Falls and feeling the incredible power of nearly 3,000 tons of water crashing over the edge every second. Photos and videos simply can't capture the sound, the force, or the feeling of standing so close to one of the world's most famous waterfalls.

The cruise begins with beautiful views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls before making its way toward the Horseshoe Falls. As the boat gets closer, the mist becomes heavier, the roar of the water grows louder, and before you know it, you're completely surrounded by the falls. It's an unforgettable experience that truly puts the scale of Niagara Falls into perspective.

One thing to know before you go - you will get wet. Hornblower provides everyone with a complimentary poncho, but don't expect to stay completely dry. By the time you reach the heart of the Horseshoe Falls, the mist is intense, and depending on where you're standing, you'll likely end up soaked. We embraced it, and honestly, it just made the experience even more fun.

For us, this was easily one of the highlights of our entire trip and an attraction we'd recommend to anyone visiting Niagara Falls. If you're debating whether it's worth it, our answer is an easy yes. It's iconic for a reason, and we'd happily do it again every time we visit.

Classless Wanderers Tip: We recommend riding the Hornblower earlier in the day before your clothes are damp from other attractions - or bring a small towel and a change of socks if you plan to continue sightseeing afterward. Even with the poncho, expect to get at least a little wet, especially if you're standing near the front or sides of the boat.

🎪 Clifton Hill

Often referred to as the "Street of Fun," Clifton Hill is Niagara Falls' entertainment district and one of the liveliest places to visit after you've spent the day exploring the waterfalls.

The street is packed with attractions, restaurants, arcades, souvenir shops, mini golf, museums, sweet treats, and family-friendly entertainment. Whether you're traveling with kids or just embracing your inner child, there's something around every corner.

One of the best ways to experience Clifton Hill is by purchasing the Clifton Hill Fun Pass. Instead of paying separately for each attraction, the pass bundles several of the area's most popular experiences into one discounted ticket. During our visit, we used it to enjoy attractions like the Niagara SkyWheel, Wizard's Golf, Zombie Attack, and Movieland Wax Museum, making it an excellent value if you're planning to spend a few hours on Clifton Hill.

We especially loved visiting in the evening when the entire street came alive with colorful lights, music, and an energetic atmosphere. It almost feels like a Canadian version of a boardwalk, with something exciting happening everywhere you look.

Even if you don't plan on riding every attraction, Clifton Hill is worth wandering through at least once. Grab an ice cream, challenge each other to an arcade game, ride the SkyWheel, or simply soak in the lively atmosphere.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Visit Clifton Hill after sunset. The neon lights, illuminated attractions, and bustling energy completely transform the street and make it one of the most fun places to spend an evening in Niagara Falls. If you're planning to do several attractions, the Clifton Hill Fun Pass is well worth considering and can save you a significant amount compared to buying individual tickets.

🎡 Niagara SkyWheel

Standing 175 feet (53 meters) above Clifton Hill, the Niagara SkyWheel offers one of the best panoramic views of Niagara Falls and the surrounding entertainment district. The enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas make it a comfortable experience year-round, whether you're visiting on a warm summer day or during the winter months.

We rode the SkyWheel in the evening, and it was the perfect way to see Clifton Hill come alive. As the wheel slowly rotates, you'll enjoy incredible views of the illuminated Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and the colorful lights of Clifton Hill below. Each ride includes several rotations, giving you plenty of time to take photos and soak in the scenery.

While there are other places to enjoy aerial views of Niagara Falls, the SkyWheel offers a unique perspective right from the heart of Clifton Hill. We especially recommend riding after sunset when the falls are lit up and the entertainment district is glowing with neon lights.

If you're already planning to spend time on Clifton Hill, the Clifton Hill Fun Pass makes the SkyWheel an excellent value. It's one of the pass's signature attractions and a fun way to end an evening after exploring the area.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Ride the SkyWheel just before or after sunset for the best of both worlds. You'll get to watch the city transition from daylight to the colorful evening lights, and if you're lucky, you may even catch the nightly fireworks from above. Try to sit on the side of the gondola facing the falls for the best views and photos.

🇺🇸 Walk Across the Rainbow Bridge to the USA

One of our favorite experiences in Niagara Falls wasn't actually an attraction - it was walking across the Rainbow Bridge into the United States.

The walk itself only takes about 10 - 15 minutes, but the views are incredible the entire way. From the bridge, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Niagara Gorge, making it one of the best photo opportunities in the area.

Crossing into the United States is straightforward if you have a valid passport (and any other required travel documents). After passing through U.S. Customs, you're just a short walk from several attractions that are well worth adding to your itinerary.

🌳 Explore Niagara Falls State Park

Your first stop should be Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States, established in 1885. Designed in part by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the park offers scenic walking paths, beautiful overlooks, and a completely different perspective of the waterfalls than you'll find on the Canadian side.

🌊 Don't Miss Cave of the Winds

If there's one attraction on the American side that we'd tell everyone to experience, it's Cave of the Winds.

This ended up being one of the biggest highlights of our entire trip.

After descending by elevator into the Niagara Gorge, you'll walk along a series of wooden boardwalks that bring you right beside Bridal Veil Falls. The famous Hurricane Deck gets you so close to the rushing water that you'll feel the full force of the falls. Ponchos are provided but don't expect to stay dry!

In our opinion, Cave of the Winds is every bit as memorable as the Hornblower Cruise and offers a completely different perspective of Niagara Falls.

If you have the time and proper travel documents, we can't recommend crossing the Rainbow Bridge enough. Between the scenic walk, the historic state park, and the unforgettable experience at Cave of the Winds, it turned a simple border crossing into one of our favorite afternoons of the trip.

🍗 Grab Lunch at Anchor Bar

After spending the morning exploring Niagara Falls State Park and experiencing Cave of the Winds, we recommend making your way to Anchor Bar for lunch.

Anchor Bar's Buffalo, NY location is known as the birthplace of the original Buffalo wing and has been serving this iconic dish since 1964. While everyone has their own opinion on who makes the best Buffalo wings, we thought it was a fun stop to experience a piece of food history while we were already on the U.S. side of the border.

It's a convenient place to refuel before walking back across the Rainbow Bridge, and pairing it with Niagara Falls State Park and Cave of the Winds makes for a perfect half-day adventure in the United States.

Classless Wanderers Tip: Bring your passport, wear comfortable walking shoes, and don't forget a few coins for the pedestrian toll. We recommend crossing earlier in the day to avoid longer border lines, then heading straight to Cave of the Winds before exploring the rest of Niagara Falls State Park.

Where to Eat In Niagara Falls

Whether you're looking for a memorable meal overlooking the falls, a quick bite between attractions, or a sweet treat after exploring Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls has plenty of great options. These are the restaurants and snacks we personally tried during our visits.

Where We Stayed

We've actually stayed in two different hotels during our visits to Niagara Falls, and each offered a completely different experience depending on the type of trip you're planning.

🛏️ Travelodge by Wyndham Niagara Falls at the Falls (Our Most Recent Stay)

For this trip, we stayed at the Travelodge by Wyndham Niagara Falls at the Falls, and the biggest advantage was its location. We were located ON Clifton Hill, so access to restaurants, and many of Niagara Falls' most popular attractions was super convenient. The hotel offers on-site parking for $20CAD per day which we thought was reasonable.

If you're planning to spend most of your time exploring the falls, Clifton Hill, and the surrounding attractions, it's a convenient and budget-friendly option.

🛏️ The Tower Hotel (Previous Trip)

On a previous visit, we stayed at The Tower Hotel, and while it was a different experience, it offered something the Travelodge couldn't - incredible views of Horseshoe Falls.

If celebrating a special occasion or simply waking up to one of the world's most famous waterfalls is high on your priority list, The Tower Hotel is hard to beat. It's a more romantic option and puts you just steps from Table Rock, Journey Behind the Falls, and the Niagara Parks attractions.

Best for: Couples • Anniversaries • Falls views • Romantic getaways

💡 Which Would We Choose?

If our goal is to spend all day exploring Niagara Falls and Clifton Hill, we'd happily stay at the Travelodge again because of its central location and value.

If we're planning a romantic getaway or celebrating a special occasion, we'd splurge on The Tower Hotel for the unforgettable views of the Falls.

Classless Wanderers Tip: If your budget allows, consider paying a little extra for a falls-view room at The Tower Hotel. Waking up to the sight of Horseshoe Falls - and watching the nightly illumination from your room - is an experience you won't soon forget.

How Many Days Do You Need?

If it's your first visit, we'd recommend spending at least two full days.

That gives you enough time to experience the major attractions, enjoy Clifton Hill, and still leave room to slow down and appreciate the falls themselves.

If you also want to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, wineries, or cross into the United States, three to four days is even better.
