If there’s one place in Belgium that genuinely feels like stepping inside a storybook, it’s Bruges.
Cobblestone streets. Medieval buildings. Dreamy canals. Horse carriages clip-clopping past gothic towers. Cozy underground beer bars. Waffles the size of your face. Honestly, Bruges almost doesn’t feel real.
And while yes, it’s one of the most touristy cities in Belgium…we completely understand why.
After spending 2 nights exploring Bruges during our Belgium road trip, we quickly realized this city is so much more than just a quick day trip. Early mornings before the crowds arrive and evenings after the tour groups leave ended up being some of our favorite moments of our entire Europe trip.
So here’s everything we did, what we loved, what we’d skip, and all the best things to do in Bruges Belgium.
🌎 Where is Bruges?
Bruges is located in northwestern Belgium in the Flanders region and is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.
It’s easily accessible from:
- Brussels (1 hour by train)
- Ghent (25 minutes by train)
- Amsterdam (around 3 hours)
- Paris (around 2.5 hours)
This makes Bruges an incredibly popular stop on many Europe itineraries.

⏳ How Many Days Do You Need in Bruges?
We personally recommend spending 2 nights in Bruges.
Most people visit Bruges as a day trip, but staying overnight completely changes the experience. During the middle of the day, Bruges gets extremely busy. But in the early morning and evening, the city becomes unbelievably magical.
Having 2 nights allowed us to:
- explore before crowds arrived
- enjoy slower evenings along the canals
- experience Bruges after dark
- fit in breweries, restaurants, and hidden corners without rushing
If you only have one day, you can still see the highlights. But if you really want the fairytale atmosphere Bruges is famous for, stay overnight.
🛏️ Where We Stayed in Bruges
Finding the right place to stay in Bruges can completely change your experience, especially if you want to experience the city before and after the day-trip crowds. We chose to stay right in the heart of the historic center, and honestly, it ended up being one of the best decisions of our entire Belgium trip.
📍La Civière d’Or Guest House
We stayed at La Civiere D'Or Guest House booked through Booking.com and absolutely loved the location - it's directly on Grote Markt Square and honestly we could not have picked a better location.
Walking outside straight into the heart of Bruges every morning felt unreal. Plus, being centrally located made it super easy to return for breaks between exploring, food stops, and brewery visits.
Waking up each morning to the view of the Belfry towering right outside our window honestly felt indescribable. Watching Bruges slowly come to life before the crowds arrived made staying directly on Grote Markt completely worth it and ended up being one of the most magical parts of our entire stay.
If your budget allows, staying inside the historic center is 100% worth it.
Note: This room does involve walking up narrow staircases.

✨ Best Things to Do in Bruges Belgium
Bruges may be small, but it’s packed with medieval landmarks, dreamy canal views, cozy beer bars, chocolate shops, hidden alleyways, and enough fairytale scenery to make you feel like you accidentally walked onto a movie set. Here are the best things to do in Bruges Belgium based on our 2-night stay.
To make planning your trip easier, we mapped out all of our favorite places in Bruges including attractions, breweries, chocolate shops, bars, and restaurants 👇
💾 Save this map for your Bruges itinerary planning!
🏛️ Explore Grote Markt Square
This is the beating heart of Bruges.
Surrounded by colorful historic buildings and cafés, Grote Markt feels like something straight out of a medieval movie set.
It’s touristy? Absolutely.
Still stunning? Also absolutely.
We highly recommend waking up early and coming here around sunrise before the crowds take over. This was one of our favorite times to photograph Bruges.

🔔 Visit the Belfry of Bruges
The Belfry Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in Bruges.
We visited right when it opened at 9am to avoid lines. While the views from the top are beautiful, this was honestly one of the few attractions we personally didn’t think fully justified the price point at around €18 per person.
There are a lot of stairs (366 to be exact) and narrow passageways.
If climbing historic towers is your thing, you’ll probably love it. But if you’re trying to prioritize your budget and time, we’d personally spend more time wandering canals and enjoying food instead.

🩸 Basilica of the Holy Blood
This small but incredibly detailed basilica is one of the most unique churches in Bruges.
It’s famous for housing a relic believed to contain the blood of Christ, but even beyond the religious significance, the interior itself is absolutely beautiful.
The upstairs chapel especially feels incredibly ornate and dramatic compared to the more understated exterior.
Even if you’re not particularly religious, it’s worth visiting simply for the architecture and history.

🕳️ The “Underground Bruges” Ruins
This one ended up being a bit disappointing for us.
You can access the underground archaeological ruins by entering through the Crowne Plaza Hotel lobby and following the signs downstairs. However, during our visit much of it was no longer publicly accessible.
It’s worth a quick look if you’re nearby or staying at the hotel, but we wouldn’t suggest going out of your way specifically for this attraction.

📸 Visit Rosary Quay (The Most Famous Photo Spot)
If you’ve seen photos of Bruges online, there’s a good chance they were taken here.
Rosary Quay is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the city with gorgeous canal reflections, medieval buildings, and boats drifting through the water.
This spot gets packed during the day, so we highly recommend visiting:
- early morning
- blue hour
- after dark
Bruges at night genuinely feels magical.

⛪ Visit the Church of Our Lady
This massive gothic church is home to Michelangelo’s famous Madonna & Child sculpture.
The church itself is free to enter, though there’s an extra charge of €10 per person if you want to see the sculpture exhibit area, which is where Michelangelo’s masterpiece is housed.
Even without paying extra, the architecture and atmosphere inside are worth experiencing. Additionally, there's an alternative version of Madonna and Child created by the Bruges sculptor, Pieter Pepers in the free area.

🌉 Cross Saint Boniface Bridge
This tiny bridge looks like something straight out of a fantasy movie and is one of the most romantic corners of Bruges.
The surrounding canals and historic buildings make this one of the best hidden-feeling photo spots in the city.

🍻 Belgian Beer Experiences in Bruges
Belgium takes beer very seriously, and Bruges might be one of the best places in the country to experience it.
Between historic breweries, underground beer cellars, canal-side patios, and hundreds of unique Belgian beers, even casual beer drinkers will probably find themselves getting into the beer culture here.
📍Bourgogne des Flandres
Bourgogne des Flandres ended up being one of our favorite relaxing stops in Bruges thanks to its incredible canal-side terrace.
It’s the perfect place to slow down for a drink after wandering the city all day. The atmosphere here feels quintessentially Bruges with medieval buildings surrounding the canals while boats drift past outside.

📍Brouwerij De Halve Maan
If you’re only planning on doing one brewery tour in Bruges, we’d personally recommend doing it here.
De Halve Maan is famous for having an actual 3.2 kilometer underground BEER PIPELINE that pumps beer beneath the city of Bruges. It transports beer from the brewery to the bottling plant outside the historic center - which honestly just feels aggressively Belgian in the best possible way.
The brewery tour includes:
- the history of Bruges beer culture
- rooftop city views
- brewing process explanations
- access to areas inside the brewery
- a beer tasting at the end
Tours were around €16 per person during our visit and lasted approximately 45 minutes.
This ended up feeling like one of the more unique brewery experiences we’ve done in Europe.

📍2be shop / The Beerwall
Another must-visit beer stop in Bruges is the famous Beer Wall at 2be.
Inside, you’ll find one of the coolest beer displays in the city with hundreds upon hundreds of Belgian beer bottles lining the walls alongside their matching glasses.
Even if you don’t drink beer, it’s worth stopping in just to see it.
The attached bar overlooking the canal is also a great place to sample different Belgian beers while soaking in the atmosphere of Bruges. It’s touristy for sure, but still a really fun stop and one of the most visually iconic beer spots in the city.

📍Le Trappiste
This underground beer cellar bar may have been one of the coolest bars we visited in Belgium.
Hidden beneath historic brick vaults, Le Trappiste has an incredibly cozy atmosphere and a massive beer selection.
Even if you don’t know much about Belgian beer, the staff are super helpful with recommendations.

🍫 Chocolate Experiences in Bruges
If beer is Belgium’s national drink, chocolate might honestly be its love language.
Bruges is packed with artisan chocolate shops, cozy cafés, praline displays that belong in museums, and enough hot chocolate to send you into a full sugar coma. We fully embraced it.
📍The Old Chocolate House
The Old Chocolate House ended up being one of our favorite cozy stops in Bruges.
The upstairs tearoom feels incredibly warm and inviting, especially on a rainy or chilly day, and the hot chocolate here is next level. Instead of just getting powdered hot chocolate, you choose an actual bar of Belgian chocolate that melts into the steamed milk.
Dangerous knowledge, honestly.
We paired ours with a waffle and absolutely zero self control.
If you’re looking for a classic Bruges experience that feels peak fairytale Europe, this is it.

📍Chocolates & Happiness
Chocolates & Happiness was one of our favorite chocolate shops to browse in Bruges.
The second you walk inside, the smell of fresh Belgian chocolate completely hits you, and the displays honestly feel like edible artwork. They have a huge variety of handcrafted chocolates and beautifully packaged treats that make perfect souvenirs (if they survive long enough to make it home).
Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth stepping inside just to experience one of Bruges’ many incredible chocolate shops and fully lean into the city’s chocolate obsession.

🎡 Other Things to Do in Bruges
Even after covering all the main highlights, there are still so many other fun things to do in Bruges depending on your interests. Whether you’re into museums, photography, history, food, or just fully embracing the fairytale atmosphere, Bruges has a way of making even simple wandering feel memorable.
🐴 Take a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
You’ll constantly see horse-drawn carriages rolling through the cobblestone streets of Bruges, especially around Grote Markt Square.
Yes, it’s touristy.
Yes, it’s probably a little overpriced.
Would it still feel incredibly magical at night? Also yes.
If you’re visiting Bruges as a couple or just fully leaning into the fairytale vibe, this could honestly be a really memorable experience. Carriage rides run around €70 per carriage for approximately 30 minutes, with up to 5 people allowed per carriage.

🚤 Take a Canal Cruise
One of the best ways to see Bruges is from the water.
Canal cruises give you a completely different perspective of the city and pass under tiny stone bridges while weaving between some of Bruges’ most picturesque buildings.
Most boat tours are relatively short, making them easy to fit into your itinerary and cost approximately €11–€15 per person and last around 30–50 minutes depending on the route and operator.

🖼️ Visit the Groeningemuseum
If you enjoy art museums, the Groeningemuseum is one of Bruges’ most notable museums and showcases centuries of Belgian and Flemish artwork.
It’s especially famous for Early Netherlandish paintings.
Even if you’re not a huge museum person, it can be a nice rainy-day activity in Bruges. Tickets are €15 per adult.

🍽️ Where to Eat & Drink in Bruges
One thing Bruges absolutely does not lack is good food.
Between cozy Flemish taverns, waffle shops, chocolate cafés, fries stands, breweries, and hidden cellar bars, we spent a large portion of our time in Bruges aggressively snacking our way through the city and honestly have zero regrets.
In addition to the amazing beer and chocolate spots we previously mentioned, here are some more notable places we ate and drank during our time in Bruges. From cozy cafés to quirky themed bars and classic Belgian comfort food, Bruges quickly became one of our favorite foodie cities in Europe.
🍔 FritBar Brugge
Sometimes after a full day of sightseeing, medieval stair climbing, and beer tasting, you just need a really good burger and fries.
FritBar ended up being one of our favorite more casual food stops in Bruges. The burgers hit the spot, and the Belgian fries absolutely lived up to the hype. Honestly, Belgium might have ruined regular fries for us forever.

🍲 Vlaminck’14
This ended up being one of our favorite meals in all of Belgium.
The Flemish beef stew was rich, hearty, and exactly the kind of comfort food you want after walking cobblestone streets all day. Pair that with the warm house bread and cozy atmosphere and this place became an instant recommendation from us.
If you visit during peak season, we’d definitely recommend making reservations at Vlaminck'14 ahead of time.

🍺 Bieratelier
Bieratelier leans fully into a bras-bar style aesthetic with quirky décor, tons of beer options, and a lively vibe that feels very different from some of Bruges’ more traditional taverns.
This place has such a fun atmosphere. If you've read our One Day in Venice blog post, you know we love a bras bar.
If you’re looking for somewhere a little more upbeat for drinks at night, this is a really fun stop.

🍷 Craenenburg
Located right on Grote Markt Square, Craenenburg ended up being a great spot to warm up and soak in the atmosphere of Bruges.
During our visit, we grabbed glühwein here while overlooking the square, and honestly, it felt like peak cozy Europe energy. Sitting outside on a chilly spring evening, watching horse carriages roll through the market square with a warm drink in hand is one of those simple travel moments that just sticks with you.

🍟 Belgian Waffles, Beer, Chocolate & Fries
Honestly? Some of our favorite meals in Bruges weren’t even full meals.
One of the best things to do in Bruges is simply snack your way around the city. Grab:
- fresh Belgian waffles
- crispy fries with way too many sauce options
- chocolates from local shops
- Belgian beer flights
- random pastries that catch your attention
Bruges is basically built for wandering and snacking simultaneously.

🤔 Is Bruges Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Yes, Bruges is touristy.
Yes, it gets crowded.
Yes, it’s all over Instagram.
But it still completely lived up to the hype for us.
The key is staying overnight.
Once the day-trippers leave, Bruges transforms into one of the most atmospheric cities we’ve visited in Europe. Wandering quiet canals after dark genuinely felt like being inside a fairytale.
💡 Tips for Visiting Bruges
- Stay Overnight: This is our biggest recommendation.
- Wake Up Early: Bruges is at its absolute best before 8am.
- Bring Comfortable Shoes: Cobblestones everywhere.
- Make Dinner Reservations: Especially during peak season.
- Don’t Overpack Your Itinerary: Half the magic of Bruges is simply wandering.
- We parked here which was perfect.
💭 Final Thoughts
Bruges ended up being one of the most magical cities we visited during our Europe trip.
Between the canals, gothic architecture, cozy beer bars, horse carriages, incredible food, and fairytale atmosphere, it’s easy to understand why Bruges is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Even with the crowds, Bruges still somehow manages to feel enchanting.
And honestly? We’d go back in a heartbeat (this was actually Craig's THIRD time here!!)
If Belgium is on your Europe bucket list, Bruges absolutely deserves at least one full day.

If you got this far, thanks for reading and remember to STAY CLASSLESS 😉
